About:
As liaison officer, I provide mainly help to gather information about the following issues for (future) colleagues from non-EU/EEA countries:
- First time applications for Visa D (entry for third country nationals)
- Application for settlement permit for researcher (with employment at University of Vienna) or for settlement permit for special cases of gainful employment (i.e. without employment but with grant/scholarship)
- Renewal of settlement permit (RWR card or researcher)
Further issues can include residence affairs of family members (spouse, under-age children), basic tax information, or any other issue that can come up in during the process of organizing your stay/renewal of your stay in Vienna.
Please note that I have gathered some experience in this field, but I am not a law or tax expert. I will do my best to help you find the right information provided by government or non-government organizations.
General advice: plan in good time, the preparation for the application (including legislation certificates where required), booking an appointment with the embassy or residence authority and the further processing there can take a lot of time.
Immigration
Registration of a new main residence or ‘secondary residence’. Anyone who takes up accommodation in Austria is required to register themselves as well as all co‑habiting minors with the competent registration authority.

Taxes & Tax Returns
- Tax benefits for highly qualified researchers moving to Austria
- As a foreign researcher or scientist, relocating to Austria from abroad, you may be entitled to a favourable tax treatment in Austria if the relocation is of public interest for Austria because it supports science and research. Written application must be sent to the Austrian Federal Ministry of Finance within 6 months after the relocation (there is no extension of application deadline possible). It is also crucial that the center of vital interest of the researcher or scientist is shifted to Austria (e.g. relocation of the family). The main challenge for postdocs is to demonstrate that their relocation is in Austria´s public interest - postdocs are not considered as highly qualified within the meaning of the § 103 Abs. 1a EStG, so additional proof of their high qualifications is needed.
